Textiles – the forgotten sandbox

By 2nd November 2022No Comments

Ever pondered the versatility of adding textiles to your lounge, bedroom, or garden? Textiles are misconceived as finishing touches – additional elements to an already established design. But textiles are so much more – silk, cotton, wool, and cloth, to name a few, can form the language of living space – with layered textures, pallets, and shapes.

History

Textiles are historically interwoven with humanity’s evolution, being the foundation of ancient economies, trade and tools needed for clothes, sails, fishnets, and rope. And whereas each has progressed beyond its original conception, one thing remains constant – the nature of textiles as part of interior design to create auras of composure, elegance, and comfort – textiles breed polished appearances.

More than an afterthought

Unfortunately, people can view textiles as an afterthought – seeing their nature as merely dressing rather than a crucial component of a design as a whole. Home fabrics deserve recognition for each interior and exterior they elevate by effortlessly emulating theme, tone, and atmosphere.

Adding to a living space

For example, if we start with a blank canvas, such as a plain white room, textiles offer the starting point for the painting. Draping bronze silk curtains, accompanied by plush red pillows, a fur rug and velvet bed sheets communicate elegance and luxury. Or perhaps you want a rustic, contemporary approach to your living space – textiles can offer naturalistic, urban, and light/dark tones through fabric, wool, and cotton.

Empower

Vibrant textile colours can brighten rooms, and lush cloth carpets can add stature to a small space. Textiles can even empower others. Choosing handcrafted fabrics made by independent designers can give your room an authentic, handmade aesthetic that is sometimes missing when using mass-produced materials.

Conclusion

It’s time we change our perception of textiles. Instead of viewing them as additional elements, we should see their complex and varied nature as a sandbox, bursting with ideas to help make our home and garden feel more special and unique.
