Why work with an interior designer & what to expect

Whether you are refurbishing a single room or starting from scratch in somewhere new, designing a space can feel like a significant undertaking.  That’s where Bonsai’s experienced and trusted interior design team comes in.

We can take the hassle out of a refurbishment, making the experience smooth and enjoyable.  The synergy of exceptional design, high end materials, and excellent craftsmanship will result in something stunning.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works.

The initial consultation

This is the getting to know you period and is basically just an informal chat, with no fee. We want to find out about you and your design ambitions, and you can get a feel for whether you are interested in our design services. We can also be a sounding board, and often this early collaboration can throw up new ideas.

Delving deeper

This often involves us popping round so you can show us the space and explain how you want to use it. You might just want to curl up on the sofa and feel serene with a distinguished four-legged friend, host parties with the sort of friends who spill drinks on rugs, or keep children entertained, or have an office where the to-do list gets accomplished. Good communication is key and we put a lot of emphasis on building strong relationships.

Planning it out

We’ll create a proposal based on your brief, explaining what we can offer and how we can help. The scheme will give you a vision of how the area could look. Everything will be listed in the brief, including spatial plans, colours, mood boards, materials and perhaps specific items of furniture or lighting. Cutting-edge software can make detailed 3D visuals so that clients get a real sense of the plans. Through us, you’ll have access to Europe’s most exciting brands and designers. We’ll be completely transparent about fees, and clients usually feel more comfortable with a fixed fee proposal and a set number of hours.

Making it happen

If you give us the go-ahead, this is when the magic happens and the design goes from concept to reality. If you’ve never had a space designed for you, you don’t know what you’re missing. We have all the right contacts, and we’ll manage all the trades, coordinate deliveries, and make sure everything is perfect before it’s signed off. Space, colour, composition, and materials all come together with confidence.

Bonsai started out in 2001, and in those early days we only did floors.  Later we opened a joinery shop and started doing complete timber solutions, including doors, windows, staircases and custom cabinetry such as tables and worktops.  After that it became a natural fit to start putting in sofas and furnishings, and the interiors department was born.

Just like our designs, the floor became the base on which everything else was built, and our manufacturing roots give us an edge on other designers.  As well as our interior design service, we can also offer a project management service called Project Partners.
