Bonsai were selected by the client to deliver the highly specialised timber flooring element of this imposing new build private residence, constructed in the heart of Guernsey’s town centre with stunning views over the Channel Islands.

This project presented a number of challenges, the most significant of which was that most walls of the house are curved. With timber flooring to be installed in many significant areas (thirteen in total), this meant that most had to be curved in some way with several being circular. In short, a highly technical installation.

The flooring was a wide-plank, engineered prime grade European oak that we had made to order by a specialist mill in the Black Forest of Germany. This gave us the freedom to specify every aspect of the timber floor’s production, have different board dimensions to suit each area and guarantee compatibility with the underfloor heating that ran throughout the home.

Our team hand-finished the timber with a highly durable, multi-coat finish comprising white pigment, followed by clear, natural matt sealers. This custom finish was agreed with the clients after a lengthy consultation process during which every aspect of the installation was carefully planned, drawn out and agreed.

At over 300 square metres this is one of Bonsai’s larger, and certainly more challenging, private timber flooring contracts and is a testament to the company’s considerable capability in this area that we were selected after a Europe-wide search for specialist contractors capable of producing this standard of workmanship.
